Citizenship
To qualify for citizenship through naturalization, individuals with 3 years of qualifying permanent resident status during the preceding 5 years and meet the physical presence in Canada may apply for Canadian citizenship. However, the 3 years qualify period of physical presence may be reduced to 2 years if you had a temporary resident visa such as work permit, study permit and visiting visa prior to obtaining your permanent residence.
If you are a permanent resident, you may be able to obtain Canadian citizenship. To do so you must meet certain requirements:
- Age: at least 18 years old
- Have permanent resident status
- Have resided in Canada for at least 3 years (short absences do not affect the application) in the last 5 years.
- Have sufficient knowledge of French or English (for people between 18 and 55 years old)
- Have a clean criminal record
- Pass a test of knowledge about Canada
